Communications is one of the challenging areas when you choose to work with the DR Congo. It is a long way away and things we take for power like email and bandwidth are not always available. In the Congo, I have spent 1/2 hour just logging in to my email account - aside from reading or sending an email. Bandwidth is a luxury. But a new challenge has emerged over the last few months.
Long term power outages. Now a power outage of 3 to 4 hours is not newsworthy in Congo. That is routine. Outages and brownouts happen routinely and the typically last less than half a day. But, in the last few months, power outages of up to two weeks have been happening in Boma. I am not sure what I would do if I lost electrical power for two weeks. I would not be typing this is my first guess. So, in addition to having slow bandwidth for email, our friends in Boma have to deal with long term power issues. So, when we do receive a communication - savor it. |
