Meet Josef
Josef (not his real name) was working as an assistant to an aging pastor, Rev. Baka (also not his real name) in a remote church in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has been doing so for a number of years and felt the call of God to become a pastor himself. In thinking about the day he would be a pastor, Josef wanted to fully prepare himself. If possible, he wanted to go and train at the seminary. Although he has the support of his pastor and his church, there was simply no money available to pay the tuition. Josef continued to focus on his preparation. One day, Josef heard an incredible story. He heard that one could obtain a scholarship to study at the seminary. He did not know see how this could be possible is such a poor country, but he had to pursue it. Josef wrote to the Rector of FACTEB, the seminary in Boma asking if what he heard was true. He sealed the envelope and sent it off with a prayer. Weeks later, he received a reply from the school. He opened the envelope with trembling hands. As he read the letter, it said that yes, there were scholarships available. Despite that apparent good news, Josef was concerned. Surely, this was too good to be true. Josef talked with Rev. Baka and received his blessing to travel to the seminary to confirm the details. While Josef walked, biked, caught rides on trucks and buses, he read and re-read the letter. When he arrived at the seminary, he made his way to the Rector’s office. As he waited, his nervousness increased. Finally, his time arrived and he went in to meet the Rector. Josef greeted the Rector on behalf of Rev. Baka. He then pulled the well-read letter out of his pocket and shyly asked the Rector whether the letter he received regarding the scholarships was authentic. Josef was visibly shaking. As he waited for the answer, the whole world seemed to stop. The Rector carefully inspected the letter and said, yes – the letter is authentic. Josef, was elated as his hope was now reality. In the ensuing period, Josef applied for school and scholarship and started his formal training for ministry. Why Invest in Congo?
