ReGen Community is an International Development charity started in 1998 and focused on making a difference in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We are based in Canada and are a registered charity with the Canadian Revenue Agency (885139576RR0001).
Why the DR Congo?
Firstly, we met some people from Boma, a city in the DR Congo, and over time, they have become good friends. They became such good friends that when this 'adventure' started, we used the name "Friends of Boma ~ Les Amis du Boma".
Secondly, our friend and their friends needed help. When we took a trip to the DR Congo, we found out a lot.
- The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the poorest countries in the word as measured by Gross Domestic Product per capita (around $500 USD) which means a family of four at the average would earn $2,000 in a year.
- The Congolese Civil Wars, beginning in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31 year reign, devastated the country, and ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups. The wars resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people since 1998 with more than 90% of those deaths the result of malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition, aggravated by displacement and unsanitary and over-crowded living conditions. Nearly half of the victims were children under five. As of 2013, according to the Human Development Index (HDI), the country has a low level of human development, ranking 186 out of 187 countries.[Wikipedia].
Finally, we had the capacity to help. What we had, they needed. Over time, we also found out that what they had, we needed. We discovered that we are Better Together!
